Fun in February. Laissez Les Bon Temps Rouler

Dear Friends,

February is the month of love, connection and fun. After all, Mardi Gras’ Fat Tuesday is February 21! Laissez les bons temps rouler! Which is French for “Let the good times roll!” As a former Baton Rouge, Louisiana, resident I can relate. Mardi Gras is the time to let your hair down and just go with the flow. Pass a good time, catch some beads, attend a Mardi Gras Ball and live in the moment.

Spending a few years in Louisiana attending college at LSU, I enjoyed adapting to the Cajun lifestyle and meeting quite a few fun-loving Cajuns while I was swimming on LSU’s NCAA Women’s Swim Team. At age 18, it was all a brand new experience for this Tennessee girl. Louisianians are just down-to-earth, friendly people. They get life. They are all about good (spicy) food, treating everyone like family and ‘live and let live’. From what I remember, you are not judged. Their attitude is, “If you are here at the party, you’re all right with me!”

And don’t get me started on LSU football. I don’t have room on the page, but when your football team has a stadium nicknamed ‘Death Valley’, I am sorry, the visiting team is in big trouble. That is where my passion for football blossomed and grew. LSU students, fans and season ticket holders are a different breed. It was the first time in my life that I heard an entire stadium stand up and curse at the other team in unison! Now that’s passion.

And they are passionate about tailgating. A tailgate before (during and after) an LSU game is something to behold. Jambalaya, gumbo, red beans and rice, grilled boudin, shrimp etouffee and don’t forget the mounds of boiled crawfish. My mouth is watering just thinking about pinching those tails and… all the rest. I do realize that I now live in Alabama (or Auburn) football territory, but even my Alabama football friends agree that it is just a different experience over der on da Bayou. Ayeeeeeeeeee.

Now let’s grab a beer and go watch a parade. I hope to see you there.

God bless you and keep you,
