At Sunflower Café, inside Virginia’s Health Foods in Mobile, functional nutrition starts with sourcing. The cafe partners with an organic and health-focused distributor that supplies more than 30,000 health food retailers nationwide, along with local farmers for its greens and microgreens. Every ingredient is organic or non-GMO, an approach the cafe has built its menu around.
That menu includes a rotating daily special alongside longtime favorites like the Turkey Avocado Melt, still the top seller, and a purple sweet potato soup known for its deep color and savory-sweet flavor—perfect for fall. The tempeh bacon BLT and tofu salad are also popular choices this season, offering plant-based alternatives to traditional egg and chicken salad.
The cafe also accommodates a wide range of dietary needs. Protein options include seafood, tofu, tempeh and Tofurky, alongside gluten-free wraps and breads, vegan cheese, and gluten- and dairy-free dressings and sauces. Seasonal produce shapes the menu as well; fall offerings include butternut squash soup and roasted root vegetables, while pumpkin soup appears when ingredients allow.
For cafe manager Mateo Pereda, the goal goes beyond the menu. “It might sound a little cheesy, but making food with love makes sense to me here because this is food I actually care about,” he says. “It’s food I can feel good about eating every day. It’s stress- and regret-free because it still tastes good.”
