Walking for Cognitive Health

We’ve all heard of the benefits of walking: stress reduction, mood improvement, immune support and cardiovascular health. But it’s not just for people. Walking can do all those things and more for pets, as well. “Walking a dog every day is not only good for their musculoskeletal and cardiovascular health, but also great for their cognitive health,” says Lydia Sullivan, DVM at EverLoved Veterinary.

Many dogs (and cats) will experience cognitive decline as they age. The signs in our dogs can be subtle. They may have accidents in the house, pace, get lost in corners or bark at seemingly nothing. While pups don’t have crossword puzzles or books to keep them bright, they do have walks. Walking engages almost all their sensory systems and lights up their brains.

Gulf Coast summers are hot and humid so be sure to keep pups from overheating. The best times to walk are early morning or very late evening. Make sure they have plenty of fresh water and wait at least an hour after eating before going on a walk. If it’s a new walking plan, keep the first few walks less than a half mile until it’s clear how far the dog can walk comfortably without slowing down.

If a dog seems to be overheating, bring it inside and apply cool wet cloths to their abdomen or anywhere there isn’t hair and place them in front of a fan to help bring them slowly and safely to a normal temperature. If they are lethargic, please see a vet right away.

“Walking can be a great bonding time for people and their pups while creating a lifelong healthy habit with your furry love,” says Sullivan.
